Point system

You have the choice of five settings regarding the point allocation at knowledge tests in Avendoo®. We explain you successively these settings and some examples. Basically we recommend you choosing the partial point system.

The basic principle of the different point modes

Making a guess in Avendoo®  causes deduction of points at the current question. Thus the learner should only mark with a cross or enter or assign, what he/she knows. If the learner didn’t mark a cross at or enter or assign the correct answer it results in 0 points.

Avendoo® resumes always the achieved value so far (current points) at multiple attempts, independent of the previous achieved value (maybe high score).

Full point system

You get full points at completely correct answers.

Evaluation

The learner gets maximum points for a question, if he/she has answered all correctly. Otherwise he/she gets 0 points.

  • All correct = full points/per question
  • Wrong answer = 0 points

Scale of points

The sum of the points of all appropriate questions is the maximum points and the minimum is 0 points. The picture below shows all potential scales of points. The full point system is shown in the upper area. And the full point system, negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome is shown in the lower area.

Punktespannen mit und ohne negativen Bereich

Scale of points with and without negative scores

Examples

There are 4 answers at a multiple choice question, but only 2 answers are correct. The learner can achieve 4 points at this question, thus he/she achieves 2 points per correct answer. He/she gets only the potential 4 points, if he/she marks a cross at the 2 correct answers. If he/she has one correct answer and one incorrect answer, he/she gets 0 points. This is necessary at all other incorrect combinations, for example 2 correct answers and 1 incorrect answer or 2 incorrect answers.

If you have 1 incorrect answer in a single choice question you get 0 points.

If you have 4 correct and 4 incorrect answers in an association question you get 0 points.

If you have 1 correct and 1 incorrect answer in a fill-in-the-blank question you get 0 points.

If you have 3 correct orders and 2 incorrect orders in an order question you get 0 points.

Passing grade

Note at the choice of the passing grade that only completely correct answered questions result in learners collecting points.

Interpretation of the results

The achieved points result from errorless answering the questions. Also at multiple choice questions only points are given if, for example, 3 correct answers from 10 potential answers are marked with a cross. This increases the level of difficulty and should be considered at the interpretation of the results.

Partial point system

There are partial points for partial correct answers.

We recommend you this point system, because it represents approximately the definition of “partial points”.

Evaluation

  • Maximum points of the current question/number of correct answers = points per correct answer
  • (Maximum points of the current question/number of incorrect answers)*(– 1) = negative points per incorrect answer
  • At correct and incorrect answers the positive points are set off against the negative points. If there is a negative outcome, this means the total result of the question is negative, that question will be evaluated with minimum 0 points. The negative points for incorrect answers are set off only against the partial points.

Scale of points

Thus the maximum is the sum of the points of all appropriate questions and the minimum is 0 points. The picture below shows all potential scales of points. The partial point system is shown in the upper area and the partial point system, negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome, is shown in the lower area.

Punktespannen mit und ohne negativen Bereich

Scale of points with and without negative area

Example 1

A multiple choice question includes 4 potential answers and thereof are 3 correct. For this question the learner gets maximum 3 points overall.

If the learner chooses the 3 correct answers, he/she gets 1 point per correct answer.

If the learner chooses for 1 incorrect answer, the overall question is evaluated with -3 points
(Maximum 3 points*(– 1)= – 3 points

  • If all answers are marked with a cross
  • 3 (points for the correct answers) – 3 (points for one incorrect answer) = 0
  • Shortly: 3-3=0
  • If the learner chooses 2 correct answers and the incorrect answer
  • 2 (points for the correct answers) – 3 (points for the incorrect answer) = – 1
  • This result will be set to 0, because no negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome.

Example 2

This option is especially useful at multiple choice questions with a lot of potential answers.

Given is a multiple choice question with 10 potential answers, thereof are 2 correct and the maximum points are 10 points. From this it follows that:

  • 5 points per correct answer (10/2)
  • – 1,25 points per incorrect answer [(10/8)*(– 1)]

In dependency of the clearness of the potential answers it is more difficult to find the 2 correct answers out of 10 potential answers. The evaluation of the question is as follows:

  • If the learner chooses the 2 correct and 2 incorrect answers
  • 2*5 points for the correct answers – 1,25*2 for the incorrect answers
  • (2*5) + (– 1,25*2) = 7,5 points
  • If the learner chooses only 2 incorrect answers
  • The result will be – 2,5 points, it will be set to 0 points

Passing grade

There are no specialties to be considered. Consider which achievements you expect from the learner and set a realistic passing grade.

Partial point system (at sequence questions)

Avendoo® evaluates the partial sequence as the correct antecessor is evaluated, too. Example: The sequence 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 is correct. The answer is 1,3,2,4,5 and 6. There will be points given for 1,5 and 6. There will be no points given for 4, because the antecessor is 2 instead of 3.

Partial point system (at association questions)

The evaluation of the points is basically for all question types very similar. But association questions act as multiple single choice questions.

Hints

  • For every correct chosen or assigned answer there a “points per correct answer” and for every incorrect chosen or assigned answer “negative points per incorrect answer”
  • For all correct and incorrect answers the points (positive and negative) are summed up. This is the points score of the question.
  • Without the option “Negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome” the learner can’t get less than 0 points.

Example

An association question includes 6 question boxes und 6 potential answers.

Evaluation

  • Maximum points of the current question/number of correct answers = points per correct answer.
    6/6 = 1 point per answer
This means: The association question is equivalent to 6 single choice questions with 1 point each maximum (!)
  • (Points per answer/number of incorrect potential answers)*(– 1) = negative points per incorrect assigned answer
    This means: (1 point per answer/ 5 possibilities to assign incorrectly)*(– 1) = – 0,2
  • If there are correct and incorrect answers the positive points are set off against the negative points.
    This means: 2*1 + 4*(– 0,2) = 1,2

Full point system, negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome

Negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome.

Evaluation

The learner achieves the maximum points for a question, if all is answered correctly. If there is an error, the maximum points of the current points *(– 1) is given.

  • All correct = full points/per question
  • Incorrect answer = full points/per question *(– 1)

Scale of points

Thus the maximum is the sum of the points of all appropriate questions and the minimum are the maximum total points *(– 1). The picture below shows all potential scales of points. The full point system is shown in the upper area and the full point system, negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome, is shown in the lower area.

Punktspannen mit und ohne negativen Bereich

Scales of points with and without negative area

Example

A multiple choice question has 4 potential answers and only 2 are correct. Overall are 4 points achievable (2 points per correct answer). The 4 points are only given, if the learner exactly marks the 2 correct answers with a cross. If he marks 1 correct answer and 1 incorrect answer with a cross,  – 4 points are given. This is necessary for all other incorrect combinations.

Passing grade

The higher scale of points and the higher difficulty reaching a lot of points should be considered necessarily at the setting of the passing grade.

Interpretation of the results

A result of 0 points means that the learner has achieved as many positive as negative points. Because the scale of points is double compared to the “normal full point system” there are supposed lesser results a success.

Partial point system, negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome

Negative scores are incorporated in the overall outcome.

Evaluation

  • Maximum points of the current question/number of correct answers = points per correct answer
  • (Maximum points of the current question/number of incorrect answers)*(– 1) = negative points per incorrect answer
  • If there are correct and incorrect answers the positive points are set off against the negative points. If there is a negative overall result of the question (negative backlog of points), it will be considered in the overall outcome.

Scale of points

Thus the maximum is the sum of the points of all appropriate questions and the minimum are the maximum total points * (– 1).

Punktspannen im Vergleich - untere Darstellung entspricht diesem System

Scale of points with and without negative area

Example 1

A multiple choice question includes 4 potential answers, of which 3 are correct. For answering this question there are maximum 3 points total. If the learner chooses the 3 correct answers, he/she get 1 point per answer (total = 3 points). If the learner chooses one incorrect answer,  – 3 points are evaluated (maximum 3 points)*(– 1) = (– 3 points) for the incorrect answer.

  • If the learner marked all potential answers with a cross
  • 3 (points for correct answers) – 3 (points for the incorrect answer) = 0
  • Shortly: 3-3=0
  • If the learner marked 2 correct answers and the incorrect answer
  • 2 (points for correct answers) – 3 (points for incorrect answer) = (– 1)
  • There is (– 1) point for the overall outcome.

  • The result will be – 2,5 points, it will be incorporated in the overall outcome.

Passing grade

The higher scale of points should be considered necassarily at the setting of the passing grade.

Interpretation of the results

The result of 0 points means that exactly as many positive points are achieved as negative points. Because the scale of points is double like at the “normal partial point system”, there are supposed lesser results a success.

Partial point system, no points are deducted for incorrect answers

Incorrect answers result in 0 points instead of deduction of points at several question types.

The supplement „no points are deducted for incorrect answers” is possibly misleading, because in this point mode you differ the question types into two categories.  Incorrect answers result in 0 points instead of deduction of points at several points.

Question types, which are be evaluated by the partial point system

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Yes-no questions
  • Picture questions

Question types, which evaluate incorrect answers with o points

  • Fill-in-the-blank question
  • Dialog question
  • Order question
  • Association question

Why do we differentiate?

We give you a short example for explaining this fact.

It is given:

  • a multiple choice question with 5 potential answers, of which are 4 correct and 1 incorrect; there are maximum 4 points for answering this question
  • a sequence, which include solely 10 multiple choice questions of this sort
  • a passing grade of 70 percent
  • and that no points are deducted if the learner gives an incorrect partial answer

So we get:

  • 1 point per correct partial answer
  • 0 points per incorrect partial answer
  • 40 maximum achievable points
  • a passing grade of 28 points

We suppose that a learner marks a cross at each all 5 potential answers at all 10 questions. Thus he achieves 4 points per question and in the overall outcome 4 * 10 = 40 points.Thereby the learner would have achieved full points without knowing something. In this point mode knowledge should be requited and unknowing shouldn’t be punished.

But this example shows, that this can’t be fully transposed, so we should make deductions of points at the question types multiple choice, yes-no and image questions. At further question types like the fill-in-the-blank question it is considered that the learner reads the question active and he/she has to try to give a logical and correct answer. Thus there are 0 points given for incorrect answers.

FAQ

User of Avendoo® suppose often, that an incorrect answer of a multiple choice question results in only 1 point deduction of points. Why this can’t be, we explain in the following simple example.

It is given:

  • a multiple choice question with 5 potential answers, of which 4 are correct and 1 is incorrect; 4 points are given for answering the question
  • a sequence, which includes only 10 multiple choice questions of this sort
  • a passing grade of 70 percent
  • and that there will be 1 point deducted at an incorrect partial answer

So we get:

  • 1 point per correct partial answer
  • -1 point per incorrect partial answer
  • 40 maximum achievable points
  • a passing grade at 28 points

We suppose the learner marks a cross at each 5 potential answers at all 10 questions. Thus he/she achievs per question 4 – 1 = 3 points (4 points for the correctly chosen partial answers minus 1 point for the incorrectly chosen partial answer). This results in the overall outcome: 3 * 10 = 30 points (3 points per question at total 10 questions).

Thus the learner has taken the passing grade of 28 points by having 30 points (75 percent). The learner would pass without knowing something.
